5/24, Flying Lotus, Live, Portland, Review, Roseland

Having only seen Flying Lotus for a quick 10 minutes at Coachella 2 years ago, I was pretty stoked for a full set. We got there early enough to see the entire set from Thundercat, who has one of the sickest live drummers I’ve ever seen. Thundercat plays some awesome funk, great to dance to and it was the perfect opener because what followed with Fly Lo was a riot.

Fly Lo played his usual experimental trip-hop like bass music, and with his new stage set up its impossible to look away. He uses three screens, and stands behind the first. The visuals are projected between each screen so there can be depth and complexity to the visuals. Check out this 14 minute video, that starts with Fly Lo’s remix of Lil Wayne’s “I Feel Like Dying” but please ignore the hommie talking through some of the video. You can really see the 3 different layers and Fly Lo in the middle pretty well from the angle of the video.

So after a bit of a warm up, Fly Lo set it off. I mean he got crazy. I had no idea he rapped as much as he did at his shows. He played a few instrumentals, got out there and spit sick verses. At one point, the crowd was clapping and yelling- he encouraged us to keep it up and stepped out to spit a little rhyme over our beat. Fun shit when the DJ gets that involved with the audience. He dropped a couple tracks that knocked everyone off their feet.

He played a remix of Mercy which you can check out in a video here:

The sickest song of the night was when he played Simon Says (Get The Fuck Up!) If he comes on tour new you, make sure you go check it out. You won’t be disappointed.

Pretty Lights is back with a new release titled Around The Block, featuring vocals and rap from Talib Kweli. I am a huge fan of everything pretty lights puts out, and I am so happy to hear the direction of this new album. His other recent releases were a bit dubby and heavy, and he (at least on this single) appears to have returned largely to his funk, soul, electro mixture that blends so beautifully together to create his sound. He is also creating a documentary to show different this process was than making any of his previous albums. As he states in his snippet, instead of using vinyl samples- he uses live instrumentation to create his depth of sound. As always, he will be giving away his masterpiece of an album ‘A Color Map Of The Sun’ for free July 2nd.

Check out the new single, the new video, and a sneak peak of the documentary below.

Bassnectar came to Oregon for one show, and in his one words wanted to make sure it was the biggest, best sounding show he could put on. He succeeded. I’ve seen Bassnectar a handful of times now, and my friends have as well. Still, all of us left the show feeling like we had just seen something special. This guy puts so much effort into his live performances, never playing the same set twice. He never just plays a song, he always adds just a little something to it or mixes something to make it that much better.

This time we stuck around after the show and Lorin did as well- greeting fans, taking pictures, signing autographs. What a guy. We snagged a little picture with him and I also snagged all these videos which I’m here to share with you all now!

First up- his new single Freestyle from his Freestyle EP. He used the same dope intro that he features in his new Freestyle Music Mixtape.

Here is Lorin dropping his hit single ugly from his last album, VaVa Voom. “And we movin all around…”

Slowing it down a bit, here is his song Hollogram also from his new Freestyle EP

Some of my favorite Bassnectar songs involve this old swing style of music. He features this updated swing beat in his Freestyle Mixtape as well and then drops it into his remix of the Zion I song Human.

My favorite video of the bunch by far. Bassnectar’s use of the lyrics from Dead Prez’s Hip Hop is just fucking awesome. He starts off with his song 100 and transitions into his own remix of VaVa Voom- the trap style banger that makes this place erupt. Bada Bing Bada Boom!

To finish things off, one of my personal favorites. Bassnectar’s remix of the Lupe Fiasco track Kick Push. He played a few more songs before the night was done and of course got in his family photo per usual. If you were here share your comments and let us know what you thought!

Boys Noize released his latest LP yesterday titled Out of the Black. Now I’m not typically one to purchase a ton of music, but just go buy this album. You won’t be disappointed. It is the first LP from Boys Noize since his release of Power in 2008, which you should also just fucking buy.

Here are some of my favorites on the new album, also check out the post right below this for the song Got It ft. Snoop Dogg.

Here are the first two songs on the album, What You Want is thick, full of noise, gritty and heavy- its a delightful way to start off an album in my opinion. XTC starts off a little cleaner and more bouncy, then builds for the rest of the song bringing the noise.

I like this song reality so much because it just goes off, one of those track you would find yourself dancing to no matter what.

Here is a video of Boys Noize at Coachella 2011 dropping this yet to be released song.

To finish things off, here is the last song from Out of the Black titled Distant Lover, a trippy melodic journey without any real direction, beautiful.

The rest of the album is killer as well, so do yourself a favor and pick it up!

A-Trak has recently released some new scratch routines. First he promoted his latest single, Money Makin’ and after a great response, he followed up with an amazing routine of Ghosts N’ Stuff.
Check both out below:

Those videos lead me to search for more. I stumbled across A-Trak’s award winning performance at the DMC World Championships from 1997. He became the youngest winner of the competition at only 15 years old. He went on to win the DMC championship again in 2000 and won the ITF and Vestax competitions, becoming the first ever to win all three competitions. Check out little A-Trak killing it at 15 years oid:

A-Trak has come a long way since 1997, and I’ve been blessed to see him in concert a handful of times. He blows my mind every time. Going to shows, you see some great DJ/Producers who can no doubt kill a live set. But A-Trak was a born DJ, producer later, and he makes sure you know it after you leave one of his shows. Check out this video of him at Fat Beats NYC:

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend!

Couple new tracks that have caught my attention recently for you today.

First a new remix from one of my favorite duo’s in the mix, LA Riots. Had a chance to see these guys live a few months back at a small venue and they ripped it up. Really enjoy their style.

Next here is a new one from the lovely Australian ladies Nervo and Australian producer Hook N Sling. I Love the Nervo twins’ vocals in this one, the track is catchy and upbeat, sure to put a smile on your face.

Preview: Check out Afrojack’s upcoming single, which he hasn’t given a title and is for now calling “Annie’s Theme” because he debuted it on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 show. He’s been playing this live for some time now, I heard him play it at Coachella this past year. Can’t wait for the release of this one- this is about as dutchy as house can get.

The build in this song makes you say “wait, this is Afrojack?” and then the drop makes you say, “yep, thats Afrojack.” I already can’t get enough of this one. Enjoy.

Martin Solveig’s new song The Night Out has made a huge splash recently, and these remixes are sure to keep those waves going.

The first one is from Maedon and you can tell. It has those funky disco style synths and beat that keep you dancing all night.

Download: The Night Out (Madeon Remix)

This next remix is from A-trak, but he certainly wouldn’t be my first guess if you asked me who remixed this one. This track is bangin! Big room massive house music right here. I’d love to see A-trak do more stuff like this.

Download: The Night Out (A-Trak Remix)

Here are some more brand new tracks that I can’t stop listening to:

Staying on the Martin Solveig theme, I can’t wait for this one to be released. Here is a video of Laidback Luke dropping this one at Ultra with Chuckie providing live vocals:

Remix from Dada Life- reminds me a lot of their Born This Way remix.

Download: Girl Gone Wild (Dada Life Remix)

Banger from David Guetta and Nicky Romero- Metropolis

Download: Metropolis (Original Mix)

Progressive house track from Joey Suki called Kiwistick. This guy has done some collaboration work with Hardwell. Loving this one.

Bassnectar is on his new VaVa Voom tour, so look for him coming to your city. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him live a handful of times now- Lorin is as good if not better than anyone you’ll see live. Check out his new song Ugly ft. Amp Live of Zion I. You can hear Amp Live’s influence in the song pretty clearly.

Here is a song I heard Bassnectar play at Sasquatch this past year, for anyone who was there…how could you forget “Oh yes- pink elephants!” Finally found that song- unfortunately the original is obviously not as good as hearing Bassnectar mix it up live while flashing this little clip behind him- check it out:
